What counts as an emergency
When to call an emergency plumber
Not every plumbing problem is an emergency. But some need immediate attention to prevent serious damage to your home.
- Burst or leaking pipe causing active flooding
- Complete loss of hot water in cold weather
- Blocked drain causing sewage backup
- Gas leak — call Gas Networks Ireland (1800 20 50 50) first, then a plumber
- Boiler breakdown in winter
- No water supply to the property
For non-urgent work, booking a regular appointment will cost significantly less than an emergency call-out rate.
What to expect
How emergency call-outs work
Call-out fee
Emergency plumbers charge a call-out fee on top of any parts and labour. This covers their time to travel and assess the problem. Typical call-out fees in Ireland range from €80 to €150. Always ask before they come out.
Assessment on arrival
Once on site, the plumber will assess the problem and give you a quote for the repair. You are not obliged to proceed beyond the assessment, though the call-out fee still applies.
Repair or temporary fix
For burst pipes, the plumber may apply a temporary fix to stop the leak and return with parts for a permanent repair. Make sure you understand what is temporary and what is a full fix.
Written invoice
Always ask for a written invoice showing call-out fee, parts and labour separately. Keep this for insurance purposes. Many home insurance policies cover emergency plumbing damage.
