Why systems need flushing

What is power flushing and why does it matter?

Over time, central heating systems accumulate magnetite sludge, limescale, and corrosion debris. This settles in radiators and pipework, reducing heat output, increasing fuel bills, and overloading your boiler pump.

Power flushing uses a high-flow, low-pressure machine to dislodge and flush this debris out of the system entirely. A good flush followed by a corrosion inhibitor can add years to a boiler's life.

  • Cold or slow-to-heat radiators
  • Discoloured water when bleeding radiators
  • Noisy boiler or pump (kettling)
  • Boiler cutting out repeatedly
  • Radiators hot at top, cold at bottom
  • High gas bills for the heat output produced

The process

What happens during a power flush

1

System assessment

The engineer will check the condition of your system, identify cold radiators, and test for sludge. Heavily corroded systems with leaking radiators may need repairs before flushing.

2

Chemical treatment

A descaler and sludge breaker are added to the system and circulated before flushing begins. This loosens compacted deposits and makes the flush more effective.

3

High-flow flush

The power flush machine is connected to the system and each radiator is flushed individually until the water runs clear. This typically takes 4–8 hours for an average home.

4

Inhibitor and testing

Once clean, a corrosion inhibitor is added to protect the system going forward. All radiators are tested, the system is balanced, and a test certificate is issued.
