What's involved
How an outdoor tap is installed
Installing an outdoor tap is a half-day job for most properties. A plumber will identify the nearest cold water supply pipe, drill through the external wall, run the supply pipe, and fit the tap with an isolation valve inside.
Irish Water regulations require a double-check backflow prevention valve on all outdoor taps. A reputable plumber will include this as standard — it prevents garden hose water from contaminating your drinking water supply.
- Cold supply tapped from nearest internal pipe
- Core drill through external wall
- Isolation valve fitted inside for winter shut-off
- Double-check valve for backflow prevention (required)
- Outdoor tap and wall plate fitting
- Frost protection advice included
Before you book
Things to consider before getting a garden tap
Location
Choose a spot close to an internal cold water pipe to keep the job simple and the cost down. Side returns and utility room walls are common choices. The further the tap from the supply, the more pipe is needed.
Frost protection
In winter, outdoor pipes can freeze and burst. An isolation valve inside the house lets you turn off the outdoor tap and drain it before cold weather. Ask your plumber to show you where it is after installation.
Water pressure
Most Irish properties have adequate pressure for a garden tap. However, if you plan to run a pressure washer or irrigation system simultaneously, discuss this with your plumber — you may benefit from a larger supply pipe.
Wall type
Cavity walls, solid stone walls, and rendered walls all need slightly different approaches to core drilling. Let the plumber know the construction type when booking so they bring the right equipment.
